You familiarized yourself with the basic image editing tools of Adobe Photoshop CS5. Now, you may want to enhance images and work with videos. In this course, you will work with the advanced tools and features available in Photoshop CS5.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: Use the tools available in Adobe Photoshop to enhance an image. Create and edit vector paths. Create custom fills and patterns. Work with layers. Automate tasks in Adobe Photoshop. Use the video tools available in Adobe Photoshop to edit and export video files. Work with other Adobe applications.

Prerequisites: Before taking this course, students should have taken the Adobe Photoshop CS5: Level 1 course or have equivalent knowledge.

You will implement and monitor security on networks, applications, and operating systems, and respond to security breaches. This course is targeted toward the information technology (IT) professional who has networking and administrative skills in Windows-based Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) networks and familiarity with other operating systems, such as Mac OS X, Unix, or Linux, and who wants to further a career in IT by acquiring a foundational knowledge of security topics; prepare for the CompTIA Security+ Certification examination; or use Security+ as the foundation for advanced security certifications or career roles.

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  • identify the fundamental concepts of computer security.
  • identify security threats and vulnerabilities.
  • examine network security.
  • manage application, data, and host security.
  • identify access control and account management security measures.
  • manage certificates.
  • identify compliance and operational security measures.
  • manage risk.
  • manage security incidents.
  • develop a BCP and DRP.

MOOCs: Exploring Learning in Open Courses

Few trends have had such a broad impact on higher education as the arrival of the massively open online course ( MOOC). The rise of large-scale courses confers a new level of preparation and facilitation to educators. Open boundaries, transparency, and access to vast networks provides new considerations for facilitation. Authority, control, expectations become negotiated or defined. Learning and community become uniquely personal and intertwined. The transformation of education from limited access to open access calls into question rigor, evaluation, assessment, accreditation, and value of theory versus skill-based learning. This workshop was developed for Professionals who have heard about MOOCs but haven't been explored the topic beyond reading about it in news outlets. The workshop draws from best practices in Online Learning to meet this new paradigm.

  • Defining MOOCs, and what the underlying assumptions are for the different types of MOOCs.

Copyright infringement lawsuits against institutions of higher education are not hypothetical: numerous universities around the country have been named in lawsuits alleging various types of infringements involving everything from posting articles and book chapters to e-reserves, course web sites, or learning management systems to streaming video and digitizing orphan works. In this workshop, you will learn how to avoid copyright infringement through application of Six Rules for Course Design as well as Fair Use guidelines.
 
While there are complexities to copyright and fair use, this workshop distills them into Six Rules for Course Design. Recent court decisions provide a measure of clarity to the parameters of fair use. The transformative use doctrine has taken on greater significance for educators relying on fair use. The growing body of Best Practices in Fair Use provides useful guidance for lawfully utilizing a wide range of resources.

Prior to attending PRD In-Depth, UMD staff must attend PRD Intro; usually given immediately prior to PRD In Depth. This PRD In Depth training is required for managers to learn specific supervisory, coaching and performance feedback techniques needed to successfully employ the PRD process. This in depth session is designed to provide a forum to discuss/review the PRD process, develop performance expectations based on unit/dept. goals, employ performance coaching and capacity building opportunities. This session will cover situational leadership strategies, coaching/motivating and providing performance feedback. Performance Improvement Plans and development planning will be covered. Supervisors new to their departments will find this session helpful in working to address challenging performance issues, and this course is required for all supervisors who conduct PRD's for other staff.

The "single search box" approach of web search engines like Google and Bing have forced libraries and system developers to rethink their whole approach to end-user searching for library and publisher resources and electronic content. Discovery systems are continuing to evolve from simple keyword search systems, to more elaborate indexed discovery, to new forms of usage-based discovery and beyond. Because discovery of content is such a critical component of library services, understanding in what potential ways these systems will develop is critical for library staff, either when selecting a system, or seeking ways to improve its service. NISO launched a research study in early 2014 on the status of discovery systems, their potential future development directions, and the systems interoperability needs of these services. Microaggressions in the Workplace

Microaggressions are brief, often confusing and upsetting, daily indignities (in language, behavior, or spaces) that further marginalize people due to their identities. While originally used as a term to name negative racial slights or insults, in this training we are extending the definition to include slights or insults that include other dimensions of difference such as race, ability, gender, sexuality, language, religion, age, etc.  Often, these comments or behaviors are not intended to hurt, but in the workplace the result is exclusion. Intentional or not, there is a cumulative impact of experiencing microaggressions. As progressive as many workplaces are, we might be surprised that our everyday interactions are filled with microaggressions that undermine our self-worth and productivity. This workshop defines microaggressions, and identifies how microaggressions impact the UMD community. Participants will leave the workshop with skills to identify and begin to think about how to address microaggressions in the workplace.

In this course, you will enhance your presentation by using features that will transform it into a powerful means of communication. You will customize the PowerPoint interface to suit your requirements and use features to create dynamic and visually appealing presentations. You will then finalize a presentation and secure it to authenticate its validity. This course is designed for professionals who will use Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2013 to prepare presentations and be more productive in their work. Prerequisites:  To ensure your success, we recommend that you first take one of Element K’s introductory courses, such as Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2013: Level 1, or have equivalent knowledge and skills

Workshop Description:

​The training workshop will provide a quick overview of important information for supervisors and will give guidance on steps to take with everyday occurrences (e.g. hiring, leave, timesheets, discipline, terminations, etc.). This training is required for all supervisors (new and experienced) who have not had the training and who supervise staff and/or faculty librarians. This is not required for those who supervise hourly personnel, student assistants, or graduate assistants.
