To enhance this effort, our two offices have combined to offer a series of courses, each intended to give a deeper understanding of a specific aspect of contract and grant administration. Maryland State Ethics Commission, Did You Know?

Michael Lord, the Executive Director of the Maryland State Ethics Commission will explain the responsibilities and standards of conduct for State and local government officials and employees. Mr. Lord’s presentation will include information about compensation and expenditures, gifts, business relationships with officials, campaign contributions, and meals and receptions for legislative units.

The university policy on Sexual Harassment was updated in October 2013. It is now VI-1.20(A) UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND SEXUAL MISCONDUCT POLICY, It is important that all UMD faculty and staff attend this training. The training includes information regarding all forms of sexual misconduct and consent and also the specifics of our own University policy, VI-1.20(A), including an emphasis of understanding the obligations of Responsible University Employees, in responding to/reporting Sexual Misconduct, what is consent and the new reporting obligations for those in Consensual Sexual Relationships involving supervisory and/ or evaluative duties.

TLTC-BROWNBAG: A Flipped and Blended Learning Classroom

Learn how a Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCJS) adjunct lecturer flipped a course that he had been teaching the same way for 34 years and has now changed it to a flipped classroom/blended learning (BL) version. Dr. Tom Mauriello will discuss how he used online video lecturers together with his traditional PowerPoint slides, reading assignments, guest speakers and other A/V presentations and then incorporated new in-classroom laboratory practical exercises, group case studies, and life size mock crime scene processing activities. He will discuss why he developed the blended format and whether it was worth changing paradigms at the twilight of his 37-year teaching career.     

Light refreshments will be provided. This is a great opportunity for instructors to bring their ideas and questions to an open forum where we can discuss and learn from each other.  This event is open for all faculty and staff who enjoy participating in a lively discussion.

The Computer Connections Program is an educational empowerment program that provides University of Maryland employees with basic computer skills to increase their connections to campus resources and access job development opportunities and the overall campus community. The semester based program consists of a basic computer course, Spanish/French language support during classes and employment focused workshops.

The goal is to provide classroom learning to our employees to

  • Increase number of employees with basic computer competency
  • Increase employees’ job mobility related skills as part of professional growth and advancement
  • Increase visibility of service staff on campus, thereby supporting an inclusive workplace
  • Increase interactions between the many important member of our campus community

Adobe InDesign Level 2

Using Adobe InDesign you created simple documents. Now, you need to create large documents that are attractive and that which can be accessed globally. In this course, you will deploy the advanced InDesign techniques to enhance the look and functionality of documents.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Handle page elements. Manage styles. Develop complex paths. Import and export data to external files. Work with an XML file. Manage long documents. Export InDesign files to other formats. Adjust print settings.

Prerequisites: To ensure your success in this course, it is strongly recommended that you take the following course: Adobe InDesign CS5: Level 1, or have the equivalent knowledge.

Developing Allyship Skills: A Spoken Word Experience

Professionals sometimes forget that experiencing artful or cultural expressions can inspire their own development. This workshop uses spoken word (a rhythmic production of prose that encourages listeners to reflect) to address allyship. Focused around the spoken word poem, “You Want to Be My Ally,” this session breaks boundaries by contending with the difficult work and process of becoming and being an ally. This original piece of spoken word paired with written reflection, review of relevant concepts, and guided discussion offers participants perspective and insight on developing ally skills (i.e., advocacy, confrontation, empathy).

TLTC- Empowering underrepresented student to enhance retention: Language, psychology & service needs

The workshop aims to use constructive language to define the general demographics and characteristics of underrepresented populations in post-secondary education and encourage a move away from language that has intentional or unintentional negative connotations.  The use of language and the assignment of labels to define and categorize underrepresented populations have proven to have a psychological impact on the perceived sense of self worth, belonging, academic potential, etc.  By providing a general understanding of the demographics and characteristics of underrepresented populations, the workshop will then address how best to “customize” support services for underrepresented populations that address their social and academic needs to enhance retention in post-secondary education.   

This workshop is part of the inclusion and diversity workshop series sponsored in part by the Teaching and Learning Transformation Center, the Office of Inclusion and Diversity and The Graduate School. Participants who attend at least four workshops (there will be additional offerings in the spring semester), complete a short pre-workshop reading and write a short reflection are eligible for a letter of completion from the TLTC and either the Office of Diversity and Inclusion or The Graduate School.  For more information, please contact TLTC staff (tltc@umd.edu).  Readings will be emailed to registered participants a few days prior to the workshop and the reflections will be posted at our inclusion and diversity workshop blog (http://blog.umd.edu/cteinclusion).  Participants may use a pseudonym for posting reflections, but we ask that you identify yourself to TLTC staff for keeping track of your workshop completion purposes.

GED® Test Preparation General Education Development

University Human Resources, UMD is pleased to partner with Prince George’s Community College to provide this adult literacy services for employees of the University of Maryland College Park.  This includes delivery of GED® preparation classes at two levels, integrated computer literacy instruction focused on the skills needed for the GED® Test, and tutoring.  The courses take place on-site at a specified University of Maryland location. A GED®-level class for learners who are nearer to ready to take the GED® Test is being offered, and a pre-GED® level class for learners who need additional basic skills review before advancing to the GED®-level class.  The proposed model allows enrollment of students over the course of one year, close monitoring of student progress, and an October 2014- August 2015 semester-based schedule that mirrors college enrollment.  A pathway is created for qualified learners who begin at the lower Pre-GED® level to advance to a GED® level class in 2015.

You will create and edit basic Microsoft Office Excel 2013 worksheets and workbooks. Who should attend: This course is designed for students who desire to gain the necessary skills to create, edit, format, and print basic Microsoft Office Excel 2013 worksheets. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Create a basic worksheet by using Microsoft Office Excel 2013. Perform calculations in an Excel worksheet. Designing Effective Assessment Strategies (Multi-Day Event)

An important component of successful online teaching is developing efficient assessment strategies and methods. In this workshop you will explore formative and summative assessment techniques used in online education and develop assessment strategies suitable for your online course. PRD - Basics

University employees (staff) are required to attend PRD Intro training. PRD- Intro is an abbreviated, 45 minute class that focuses on the basics of the PRD process. Participants will review the PRD cycle (expectation setting, midway feedback and final review meetings).

Supervisors must attend a more detailed session for the PRD - In Depth training held from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Parking Information; The following lots are available near the building: Lot P1 and Lot P2- you must have a current UMD Faculty/Staff Parking Permit.  Please DO NOT park in Lot P*.  Lot 4 is an overflow lot is P1 and P2 are not available.  If you do not have a UMD Parking Permit, you can park at a meter in the P2 lot, OR obtain a one day parking permit through your department or through Transportation Services.

Interrupting Ableism: How to be an Ally in the Workplace

As part of the semester-long Rise Above Ableism campaign, this workshop aims to identify and deconstruct ableism, the system of discrimination against people with disabilities. Specifically, this workshop will define ableism, facilitate discussion around (dis)ability on our campus, and highlight how people can interrupt their own ableist beliefs, behaviors, and attitudes. Major focus will be given to identifying and connecting ableism to other systems of oppression, and we will workshop strategies to ensure inclusivity in our practices as campus community members. Participants will leave the workshop with ways to dismantle ableism in their own lives and the spaces they create. This workshop is for people with disabilities as well as people in solidarity.

“Why are they so quiet?” “Do they understand me?” “Is there something I can do to help them with language issues?” These questions are commonly asked by instructors across disciplines when non-native English speakers are present in their classes. To help maximize learning opportunities for this particular student population in our classes, this workshop focuses on helping participants examine their own pre-conceived notions of expected teacher and student roles in classroom interactions, parallelisms and discrepancies between those notions and the students’ notions of classroom interaction expectations, and interactional strategies to consider that promote both content and language learning in their classrooms.

This workshop is part of the inclusion and diversity workshop series sponsored in part by the Teaching and Learning Transformation Center, the Office of Inclusion and Diversity and The Graduate School. PRD - Basics/Intro
9:00 AM - 10:00 AM

University employees (staff) are required to attend PRD Intro training. PRD- Intro is an abbreviated, 45 minute class that focuses on the basics of the PRD process. Participants will review the PRD cycle (expectation setting, midway feedback and final review meetings).

Supervisors must attend a more detailed session for the PRD - In Depth training held from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Parking Information; The following lots are available near the building: Lot P1 and Lot P2- you must have a current UMD Faculty/Staff Parking Permit.  Please DO NOT park in Lot P*.  Lot 4 is an overflow lot is P1 and P2 are not available.  If you do not have a UMD Parking Permit, you can park at a meter in the P2 lot, OR obtain a one day parking permit through your department or through Transportation Services.

This course is required before the PRD In Depth Course. And both classes are required for supervisors who give PRD.

PRD - In Depth
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Prior to attending PRD In-Depth, UMD staff must attend PRD Intro; usually given immediately prior to PRD In Depth. This PRD In Depth training is required for managers to learn specific supervisory, coaching and performance feedback techniques needed to successfully employ the PRD process. This in depth session is designed to provide a forum to discuss/review the PRD process, develop performance expectations based on unit/dept. goals, employ performance coaching and capacity building opportunities. This session will cover situational leadership strategies, coaching/motivating and providing performance feedback. Performance Improvement Plans and development planning will be covered. Supervisors new to their departments will find this session helpful in working to address challenging performance issues, and this course is required for all supervisors who conduct PRD's for other staff.

ORA #13 - Intellectual Property & Technology Transfer

To enhance this effort, our two offices have combined to offer a series of courses, each intended to give a deeper understanding of a specific aspect of contract and grant administration. Whether learning to manage your settings in a way that supports your professional persona or planning integrations between a Facebook group and your next course, this learning experience will further your ability to make use of this powerful social networking tool.

This workshop is designed for those interested in using social media but maintaining professional boundaries for students. Participants will evaluate strategies to maximize social media usage while avoiding some of the awkward issues that result from “friending” students. We will explore ways to manage social media settings to promote appropriate levels and types of engagement with different groups.

Join us in this workshop to learn about the many available web 2.0 tools, quick and easy ways to evaluate them, and strategies for linking and embedding to get them into your LMS.  As an added bonus, we'll share tips and strategies for managing multiple accounts, filtering large quantities of information, and other important web literacy skills.  If you've never used any web 2.0 tools before, this workshop is for you.
Adobe Photoshop CS5 Level 1

Adobe Photoshop has been an indispensable image-editing software application for many years. As an aspiring graphic designer, you would like to familiarize yourself with design creation and image editing using this software. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Explore the Adobe Photoshop CS4 environment. Determine the resolution and graphic type. Work with selections. Work with multiple layers. Enhance images. Identify the various image mode characteristics and color adjustment options. Save images in the web, print, and PDF formats.

Prerequisites: Before taking this course, students should have basic Windows application skills, such as copying and pasting objects, formatting text, saving files, and so on. It is also recommended that students have some experience with digital photography, and graphics working with Microsoft Office PowerPoint, Adobe InDesign, or Microsoft Office Publisher.
